says: Blackout? No Problem!
On
Saturday, August 16th, the Great Lakes Renewable Energy
Association was hosting a training seminar on wind energy
in Dimondale, Michigan - just southwest of Lansing. Suddenly,
the power went out. This was surprising since the blackout
that had started on Thursday hadn't reached this far west.
Dave Lankheet, our Vice President and the Owner of Sundu
Solar Energy, was on hand to rectify the problem. He plugged
the PowerPoint projector into our Traveling Renewable Energy
Display (TRED), and the class continued! TRED is a trailer
with solar photovoltaic panels, storage batteries, and an
inverter (to convert the battery power to house current).
Parked next to the GLREA energy demonstration center on
Bridge St. in downtown Dimondale, the solar cells had kept
the batteries fully charged over months of storage. Power
was readily available when we needed it most! If you'd like
to learn more about renewable energy such as solar cells,
wind power, and solar heating and hot water, sign up for
our seminars and other educational programs. You can contact
the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association at 517-646-6269
