Apprentice Program Description
This 5-day program combines classroom sessions with field experience to provide the graduate with the experience and reference materials needed to advance a career in the distributed generation profession. It consists of three classroom and two workshop days.
Objectives
1. Provide an introduction to renewable energy
theory
2. Introduce apprentices to different types of
distributed generation technologies and
system components
3. Train apprentices in the methods of safe
utility interconnection 4. Train apprentices in the issues of the
National Electric Code
5. Provide hands on installation experience
6. Brief exposure to troubleshooting distributed
energy systems
7. Provide continuing education and job
placement opportunities

DAY 1
Electricity Review, Solar Characteristics, Photovoltaic
Theory and System Components
DAY 2
System Configurations, Standards and Codes, Siting
and Design, Utility Interconnection, Troubleshooting
and Maintenance
DAY 3
Mechanical and Electrical Design, Permits, System
Construction, Installation Practices, Project
Management and Safety
DAY 4 –
Hands On Workshop
Component Testing, Working With Inverters &
Batteries, PV System Construction and Assembly
DAY 5 –
Hands On Workshop
PV System Assembly, System Testing and Commissioning
Course Prerequisites
· Formal training in electrical technology at a community college level or equivalent, OR
· Some classes in electrical technology and some practical experience, OR
· A good self-learned fundamental knowledge of electrical technology and significant practical
experience
Instructors
· Robert Pratt, PE: Owner and President of RGP Pro, Inc. and previously Principle Engineer specializing in energy systems and photovoltaic technologies for 36 years at DTE Energy.
· Bruce Lowstuter: Owner of Clean Energy Systems, is a licensed Professional Engineer and a GLREA certified Systems Integrator. He has 30 years experience in design and management of engineering projects.
