Apprentice Program
The apprentice workshop is a 5-day program combining classroom sessions with field experience to introduce the participant to distributed generation technologies and interconnection issues. The seminar includes 2 or 3 days of field experience with installation practices and procedures.
The workshop is designed for individuals beginning a career as a PV system integrator, an electrical or mechanical engineer or a professional in the building construction industry. The program will provide the successful graduate with the experience and reference materials needed to advance a career in the distributed micro generation profession.
The GLREA Certification Board is committed to the long-term success of this program meeting these objectives:
- Provide an introduction to renewable energy theory.
- Introduce apprentices to different types of distributed generation technologies and system components.
- Train apprentices in the methods of safe interconnection.
- Train apprentices in the issues of the National Electric Code (NEC).
- Provide a hands-on installation experience.
- Brief exposure to troubleshooting distributed energy systems.
- Provide continuing education and job placement opportunities.
Seminar Prerequisites:
Formal training in electrical technology at a community college level or equivalent, OR
Some classes in electrical technology and some practical electrical experience, OR
A good self-learned fundamental knowledge of electrical technology and significant practical experience
Seminar Completion Requirements:
Successful completion and submission of a 50 question take-home exam
Using the information presented and the reference materials provided during the apprentice class, three PV systems must be designed and submitted according to the following plan:
#1 - Stand-alone system with battery storage
#2 - Grid-tied system with no battery storage
#3 - Utility-interactive system with battery storage and utility backup for quality year-around performance
Designs should be submitted in proposal form including scope of work, project schedule, and terms and conditions.
Drawings and specifications are required as needed for building and electrical permits.
Documentation is required on material costs, labor rates and expenses, permits, licenses and subcontractor costs.
Designs will be evaluated for compliance with applicable codes and accepted design practices.
Incomplete designs will be returned to the apprentice for revisions and/or additions.
NOTE:
Attendance at the PV Apprentice Training Seminar may
be waived on request if the applicant believes he
is fully competent in photovoltaic design and application.
However, the exam and design projects must be completed
for apprenticeship and to qualify for attendance and/or
testing in the advanced training seminar that leads
to certification. Full certification requires successful
completion of an additional monitored exam and submission
of documents showing extensive experience with ten
or more PV systems totaling at least five kilowatts.
